SAINTS MARCH SOUTH 12 September, 2009 Burlington, Vermont - After spending 8 hours cooped up on a bus, your Saints were eager for their run out with the University of Vermont Catamounts club team. The prospect of facing off against bigger, stronger, faster, and more experienced players in front of NCAA coaches and assistant coaches brought the best out of our travelling squad of 15.
The game was characterized by tough tackles and quick movement. Your Saints took the lead when Luis Miguel Aguirre drilled a strong left footed shot low into the corner of the net in the first half. SAC held their own against the opposition, though could not prevent an equalizing goal that came as a result of hard work by the UVM forward. His last ditch slide pushed the ball past new boy Evan Kalentzis and tied the score at 1 just before the half.
In the second half, your Saints picked up the pace and soon tied the game. Kevin Zacharuk drove down the left and sent a hard low cross to the front post where Hayden Neuman opened his SAC account by meeting the cross perfectly and dispatching the ball to the back of the net with a clinical finish. Battered and bruised from the physical play, SAC withstood UVM’s efforts and walked off the park with a well earned 2-1 victory.
Only a couple of hours later, your Saints returned to the field to do battle with Stanstead College. With memories of two defeats to SAC last year, Stanstead started well, eager to avenge the previous season’s exit at CAIS. However, not to be outdone, your Saints were determined to show who was the better team, and put together a convincing display from the first whistle to the last. Craig Davis, in particular, was lively and had an eye for goal. The Stanstead keeper could do nothing to stop Davis’s three tallies, nor individual efforts by Baillargeon and Lanzagorta. Arun Partridge dove valiantly in an attempt to push the ball around the post to preserve the shutout, but it was not to be. Your Saints ended the afternoon as comfortable 5-1 winners against a promising Stanstead side that will no doubt improve over the course of their season.Next Game: Saturday, 19 September, at St. Michael’s College School, 11:30am.
