Cadet Snare Drumming Levels
AT ST. ANDREW’S COLLEGE

The following list indicate the requirements and recognition for the Snare Drumming skill levels used at our cadet corps. When you think you are ready to advance to the next level, see your instructor to arrange for an evaluation.

Level Requirements Recognition
I(S)
  • Must be able to play competently to the end of Book 1 in the Pipe Band Snare Drum Method Book.

II(S)
  • Must be able to perform competently four proscribed tunes on the snare drum with a standard attack and cutoff.
  • Must have completed the Basic Drummers Course

Lance Corporal
III(S)
  • Must be able to perform parade band march and slow march repertoire consisting of approximately 15 tunes.

  • Must have completed Book 2 of the Pipe Band Snare Drum method

  • Must be able to change top and bottom heads and snares

  • Must be able to perform all marching and drill required for the Annual Inspection

  • Must be able to perform the School Drum Fanfare

  • Must be willing and able to perform “marching-in” functions that call for a solo drummer with piper.

IV(S)
  • Must be able to perform all proscribed band tunes of any time signature, as well as at least one each of a funeral lament, 2/4 competition march, strathspey, reel and jig.
  • Must have completed Book 3 of Pipe Band Snare Drum Method
  • Must be able to tune snare drum on its own
  • Must perform regularly with the Pipes and Drums
  • Must be able to complete basic maintenance and repairs
  • Must be willing and able to instruct beginners.
  • Must be willing to perform at all functions that call for a solo drummer with piper.

V(S)
  • Must be able to perform with good rhythm and technique a minimum of thirty tunes representing each of the common time signatures.
  • Must be able to perform a basic competition level March, Strathspey and Reel
  • Must be able to perform a basic competition level Hornpipe and Jig
  • Must be able to tune the drum section including the bass and tenor drums
  • Must perform regularly with the Pipes and Drums
  • Must be able to perform Drum Major mace drill
  • Must be willing and able to instruct beginner or intermediate level drummers.
  • Must be able to perform as Leading Drummer for Pipes and Drums
  • Must be familiar with requirements for performing with dancers
