I have completed the Silver Star program, and I am keen to have the opportunity to be a leader. In my first year at SAC I was apart of the Junior Varsity Soccer, and Junior Varsity Hockey Team. This year I was a member of both of those teams as well. This year was my first time being a member of the SAGE committee, where we worked to make our school more environmentally friendly, and aware. I have also played AAA hockey for the past 8 years. The teams I played on include: The York Simcoe Express (Captain/Assistant Captain), The Wexford Raiders (Captain/ Assistant Captain), The Vaughan Kings, and the Toronto Red Wings (Assistant Captain). These teams helped me understand what it is to lead a group of men to a common goal. It also helped my problems solving skills, and how to lead by example.

3IC in Sifton Company 2008-2009 I was the only grade 10 to have any type of house cadet leadership position in Sifton, and on the numerous days that the older instructors were not there I had to fill in for them. Sports I have been on a sports team every term I have been at St. Andrew's, and was a captain of 1 of them. I have been the on U16 Football twice, U16 Hockey twice, U16 rugby and 1st lacrosse. Residential life Council Being on the Res Life Council, we get to plan monthly activities for the boarders. These include inter-house sports, house dinners, and movie nights. We make sure the boarding experience is the best it can be. Outside SAC Sports Moderator As the moderator of this conference, I had to often sort out issues and arguments among other students and their opinions of sports teams. I had to constantly make sure everything was running smoothly, and that that nothing was said that offended other students.

Cadets - New boy, didn't have much experience in cadets this year, but was one of two leader's for our platoon in our base borden trip, which was appointed by the intructer of our platoon. I have recieved by silver star this year, and was given two gold's in the fitness testing near the middle of the year. Sports - I play on two first first teams, soccer and basketball, and also played rugby for the first time this year, on U16. I was the only grade ten on 1st basketball, and only one of two on 1st soccer. Leadership - I am on the admission clubs for the school, in which I tour around potential andreas, and tell them what the school is all about. Also, I applied for Mac house captain next year. I do not have many leadership experiences here at SAC because I am a new boy, but I am looking to get as involved as I can.

Cadets (2007-present) Rank: Sergeant (Sgt.) My Cadets average on the report card is 91%, having completed both Silver and Gold Star level. My present rank is Sergeant, and potentially become a staff cadet or an officer next year. To date I have joined four major Cadets duties: 1. Annual school parades (Church Parade, Headmaster Parade, and Cadets Inspection - 07/08, 08/09 year) 2. Regiment Change of Command from 48th Highlanders in Moss Park, Toronto – Fall 2008 3. Remembrance Day Parade November 2008 in Moss Park, Toronto. I traveled from my brother’s house in Kingston at 3 in the morning catching the earliest bus in Toronto; arrived at 6, and waited in Queens Park before the rest of the Cadet core came and parade to Moss Park afterwards. 4. Group leader and event organizer of the SAC Trivia as a completion of Gold Star project. In the group: Sgt. Wathey, Sgt. Lanzagorta, Sgt. Filipenko. 5. Duke of Ed Silver - May Long Weekend trip to Hockley Region and Bolton. I also completed and edited the Gold Star exam-review and used by approximately 85% of cadets who took Gold Star exam. I was also awarded the Bronze Fitness Medal. CO-CURRICULAR Summit Writers member (2007-present) Writing had been my passion since I first took up a pen. To pursue this interest, I joined Summit Writers at St. Andrew’s, the club lead by Adam Nickerson. We usually meet every week, reviewing story assignments that is given a week in advance, or write as free as we can. To date I have two stories: Within the Door and The Case of Giles Chadwick. At the end of the year, the best writing selections are published in The Thistle. St. Andrew’s Upper School News Website Writer (2009-present) For university, I am aiming to take either Journalism or Creative Writing as my major. To do so, portfolio is necessary. After listening to Mrs. Kim Sillcox who spoke in the Speakers Series arranged by the university counselling late in February 2009, I have start writing for St. Andrew’s website. The first story, titled SAC Debating Team Flies High (http://www.sac.on.ca/US-2009-debating.asp was published early in March. Yet, there will be more stories coming as time goes on, as part of my commitment with Mrs. Sillcox. The New Bloomsbury Group i.e. The Independent, writer (2008-present) It is a club that I joined with the same reason why I agreed with Mrs. Sillcox to write for St. Andrew’s website. It is a club lead by three different editors each term. My involvement are giving out ideas, supporting other writers, and to date I have my story published, “How to be a Prefect?” in The Independent. Photographers of S.A.C. (PSAC) member (2007-present) I joined PSAC right after I entered St. Andrew’s College. It is the first opportunity I found at St Andrew’s that could extend myself further in the art of photography. In the year I first entered, I learned a lot of photography skills from talented photographers i.e. Evan Kuo, Hidetaka Ishii, Geoffrey Ruddock, Mr. Burton and Mr. Kimmerer. All of us have the responsibility to take and supply pictures for the websites or The Review. So far, my achievements to this club are: • Photographs for Sports and other events: o FOCUS Festival of Arts Photos (4 plays) o 1st Football, 1st Soccer, U12 Soccer, U13 Tier 1 Soccer, U14 Tier 2 Soccer o Homecoming (Football, Volleyball, and Soccer) and Homecoming Photo Trivia o SASSAW Photo Show o Macbeth o Winter Activities Day o Photographs of Seagull, Penang Beach (Malaysia) – parasailing view (that I took when I parasailed), and Jellyfish now on display in the Wirth Art Centre, thanks to Mr. Kimmerer. o FOCUS Festival of Arts Photos (23 plays) I took a lot of pictures. Instead of leaving them sitting in my photography folders, I created photo-stories with PhotoStory 3 program which I hoped satisfy whoever watching it. o Seagull and Canadian Geese Photo-hunting (Event Organizer) which produced: Seagull photo-story Canadian Geese photo-story o Padang, Indonesia landscape photo-story o Pipes and Drums photo-story. I joined the Pipes and Drums band who travelled to Toronto FC’s home stadium in May 2008. o Memorial House Grads photo-story – House Project 2007/2008 – annual project assigned by Memorial Housemaster Mr. and Mrs. Perrier o Memorial House Grads photo-story – House Project 2008/2009 (in progress) Christian Fellowship (2008-present) I am a Catholic, and I join Christian Fellowship to pursue my faith. The club I joined this year had been tremendous in shaping my spiritual life, and I have to credit my good friend and Prefect Aaron MacDonald for that. We meet on Tuesdays; most meetings we do a lot of activities, among them praying, read the Bible, listen to Aaron’s messages that he learned first-hand from the Bible, and it is absolutely healthy for spirit and mind. Muslim Heritage Group (2008-present) Although I am a Christian, I cannot forget where I am from, Indonesia. Indonesia is a Muslim country that has the biggest Muslim population in the world, and to join this club it feels like I am encountering my fellow Indonesians back home. The club lead by Zohair Rahman is a great club as well, where I can meet people with different religious views and celebrate different cultures and events, and also talking to them with some Islamic terms that I know. We meet on Thursdays, and most meetings we discuss the Koran, Islamic culture, and other general discussions. Potential co-curricular: Astronomy Club (coming 2009) I found astronomy an interesting branch from science. I enjoy reading astronomy books and looking at astronomy pictures, yet the next challenge for my photography skills will be taking astrophotography pictures (stars, comets, moons or suns – not right away because we need expensive cameras and tools). To pursue my interest to astronomy, I plan to create a new astronomy club with Dr. David Joiner. I am thinking of the activities this club can do, as well as making this club worthwhile for St. Andrew’s. Travel and Tourism Club (coming 2009) This club created by Woo Jin Jang in 2008, unfortunately, never really come up to surface. I always like to travel and go outside to see different cultures, events, nature, etc. and yet I see the idea and potential this club can be is amazing, which I feel obligated to make this club a significant one at St. Andrew’s. As Woo Jin Jang graduated this year, I can potentially relive this club and become significant for Andreans. The ideas I have so far: making travel e-zines; I can arrange some trips over the long weekend and therefore giving more options to St. Andrew’s long weekend trip choices, which I understand this will require permissions and assistance from parents and teachers. It is unfortunate to say that I am not significantly involved in sports teams at St. Andrew’s due to my low stamina and very prone to injuries, a frailty that genetically inherited in my family. I was also born late in 1991, which means I had to join First Team to be involved with Athletics. With soccer being only the sport majorly played in Indonesia, and the only sport I understand inside-out; it is fairly impossible to join any First Teams at St. Andrew’s, regarding the time I have to spend learning about the rules and getting used to the skills necessary. However, I tried to do some sports and keep my body fit. In my first year at St. Andrew’s, with no sports in the Fall due to the cut from First and JV Soccer, I tried First Fencing in the Winter – it was a relatively new sport for me with a new coach in the team. I joined a couple of tournaments, one at St. Andrew’s and one in a fencing club in Toronto, which I terribly lost in both tournaments. I joined Intramural Soccer in the Spring because soccer had been a sport that I really enjoy playing since I was as a boy. In the second year, having tried new sports e.g. squash, I joined Intramural Squash in the Fall. I found myself capable to play squash, but didn’t try out for First Squash team realizing I can’t even win against U14 squash player! I took a Winter term off sports to concentrate to my academics, then lately I joined Intramural Squash this Spring and yet I am improving myself right now. COMMUNITY SERVICE To date I have completed an approximate total of ±170 hours. I enjoy participating in community services, which basically shaped myself to be sensitive to my surroundings, to people who need my help. I got my community service hours from inside and outside St. Andrew’s. In the school: * photography * volunteers (swim meet, formal set-up/clean up, etc.) * games night with other school * cadets parades * etc. Outside of St. Andrew’s: * Teacher assistant to St. Laurensia Junior High School Journalism extracurricular * Website ‘marketer’ of St. Laurensia students’ website LaurensiaKids * Kingston Whig Standard internship. LEADERSHIP OUTSIDE ST. ANDREW'S COLLEGE Journalism extracurricular – Visio Renovasia, St. Laurensia Junior High School Magazine (2004 –present) I joined this extracurricular as a requirement in my previous school, St. Laurensia Junior High School. By joining this particular extracurricular, I pursued the first time my passion in writing and journalism. In this, I have responsibilities such as interviewing, reporting news, editing, typing, lay-outing for the magazines, as well as organizing over 20 people to produce the magazine. I have also published quite an amount of articles to the magazine, ranging from new teachers interview to travel report when I was in Venice in 2005. By writing for Visio Renovasia, I learn to be a leader, to write, to organize people to do the job they should do, as well as a better understanding of the world of journalism. Accomplishments that I had: Grade 7 (in Indonesia, this is the grade to start with for Junior High School): * The first semester, I was selected as the Editor. * The second semester, I was selected as the Assistant Editor-in-Chief. Grade 8 & 9: * Promoted to Editor-in-Chief (October 2005 – grade 8), position was held until February 2007 – grade 9. Publications: Visio Renovasia magazine December ’04 Christmas edition Visio Renovasia magazine August ’05 Independence Day edition Visio Renovasia magazine February ’06 School edition Visio Renovasia magazine January ’07 School Edition Visio Renovasia magazine June ’07 School edition I can never imagine myself neglecting St. Laurensia journalism extracurricular because this group is the first I lead and shape who I am right now. To keep my words, I become a teacher assistant to Mr. Suryanto, the coach for this group. My achievements so far: 1. Guide to School Journalism (published under the name of St. Laurensia) – Summer 2007, just before I leave for Canada. 2. As a teacher assistant, teaching and spreading the journalism skills I have and developed through the times in Canada – Summer 2008 3. Potentially I will do (no. 2) in Summer 2009 as well. Santa Laurensia Students Website – LaurensiaKids (2008-present) After a good relationship with my previous teacher, Mr Antony Sutton, he let me to do some community service over the Summer 2008, where I present i.e. ‘market’ the new students’ website (http://www.laurensia.net/ to 15 classes in 5 days, 3 classes each day with 30 students in each class, 15 minutes of speech in English. I also made LaurensiaKids fliers to be spread among 450 students in St. Laurensia Junior High School. I contributed to LaurensiaKids’s blog as well (http://laurensiakids.blogspot.com/ giving comments and suggestions to the bloggers. I am an alumnus of the school, therefore my authority is limited on posting blogs to their blog site. I have better confidence in presenting the website through speeches and discipline in doing the required ‘marketing’ works. The Power Within Educational, Motivational, and Leadership Seminar (with Bill Clinton October 16th 2008, Barbara Walters and others October 22nd 2008) I always wanted to meet great, accomplished people, expecting to learn something from them. In 2004 and 2005 I met Bryan Robson and Sir Bobby Charlton in Jakarta, both Manchester United FC captain and legends. To extend this further, in Canada finally I met great people in the events arranged by Power Within, an Educational, Motivational, and Leadership event organizer to meet famous and accomplished people. I joined this seminar twice within two weeks; the first on October 16th 2008 with Bill Clinton only in Four Seasons Centre, on October 21st 2008 with Barbara Walters, Garry Kasparov, Muh. Yunus, Pat Lencioni, Peter Sheahan, Michael Phelps, and Frank Zaslow in Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Bill Clinton, former President of the United States talked about the economic recession in the United States, commented about the coming Presidential election, the wars U.S. is encountering, etc. He has the aura of a leader, and his speech that day was comprehensive and show him that he really is a great leader. In the second time I attended Power Within event in Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Power Within were featuring nine people, but the names I mention above were the most notable. Barbara Walters is an accomplished and world-class journalist, having interviewed numerous presidents, leaders, rock-stars, athletes, etc. She talked about her life becoming a star where she went through a roller-coaster life, and also her launching of her memoir, Audition. Garry Kasparov is a world-class chess player, the best player in the history of chess. He won the World Chess Championship consecutively since his career started in the 1980s. He talked about innovation and success in leadership, which sounded the same with his new book How Life Imitates Chess. Muhammad Yunus is the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, creating Grameen Bank with microcredit system that created jobs and wealth in Bangladesh. Pat Lencioni is a consulting group president, giving ideas and suggestions to big companies around the world, and he talked about management. He wrote the New York Times bestseller 5 Dysfunctions in a Team, a book about what should or shouldn’t present in a group. Peter Sheahan is also a consulting group leader, giving ideas to Google, Coca Cola, Ernst & Young, etc. He talked about marketing and making innovations, key to success in a company. Last, Michael Phelps, the Beijing Olympics 2008 swimming Gold Medalist of eight accolades, talked about goal-setting where he achieved his dream to beat Mark Spitz’s record of seven gold medals. All of these people in both of these events gave tremendous and inspiring speeches. Listening to them let me understand more what is happening around the world and what we can do about it as an individual. Kingston Whig Standard Internship (March 23rd – 27th 2009) Desperate to have more journalism-related works other than at school, I decided to e-mail newspaper agencies in Toronto and Kingston (where I usually go during school breaks) and see if I can have an internship with them over the March Break. I e-mailed Globe and Mail, National Post, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun, and Kingston Whig Standard – and only Kingston Whig Standard came up with a positive response. I can work with them during March Break, while I also need to submit essays for them to evaluate before actually work there. It was part of my community service which summed up to 25 hours. However, it is mostly an internship, where I was trained to become a reporter by the Whig Standard staff writer Jordan Press and City Editor Claude Scilley. During my one week placement, I have done some journalism-related activities, among them writing an unpublished report about the prison farms in Kingston, compare and contrast the Vietnam War by looking at 1975 microfilms and today’s textbooks, a biography of Melody Torcolacci, Canadian record breaker in shot putting and Queen’s University Track and Field Head Coach and Football training programmer of the Gaels, and also taking photographs of Afghan ambassador who gave a lecture at Queen’s University. Labour-related works were only sorting out 1985-1991 and 2004-2008 microfilms, and arranging Kingston Whig Standard bookshelf, a job that I found to be like a librarian. The sad news is only that I experience first-hand the effect of today’s economic recession where Kingston Whig Standard staff were laid-off. Overall, I really benefited from this real-working experience, to know real people in the labour force and working well with them. World Vision Canada Donation (2008-present) I did not join the Outreach Council, but this does not mean I cannot do anything to fight world poverty and hardship. World Vision Canada, also introduced by Outreach, is an amazing donating program that sponsors children around the world that need enough supply of food, clean water, as well as education. With $35/month, I believe I can make a difference with people in this world. I sponsored one boy from Bolivia on my own, sparing some of my school allowance from my parents. I wrote “Help, as many as we can”, an article that I spread to my friends and family, but unfortunately I don’t have any response that would support me on sponsoring more and more kids. For this time, sponsoring one boy would be enough.

Since my grade nine year, Cadets has played a large role in my experience at St. Andrew's. I found myself somewhat out of place at times in that while others dreaded Thursday afternoons, I found myself enthusiastically looking forward to them. Each part of training over the year brought unique experiences. I picked up valuable leadership skills from star training, and harvested great experiences, friendships and teamwork skills from the annual cadet expedition, Rattlesnake Point in Red Star, ZET in Silver, and the ICE Leadership Workshop with Angela Mondou in Gold Star. I found my Gold Star year particularly valuable in the variety of leadership skills I picked up from the workshop in the fall, as well as the leadership modules throughout the year. I finished Gold Star with a 90%. I picked up the values of hard work, integrity, working as a team, and most importantly, getting things done. As the leader of my group in the big leadership project, I motivated and inspired those in my group to achieve our goal, ultimately resulting in our group being one of only two to complete the project by the deadline. After my completion of Gold Star I worked through the training and written examination of the National Star Certification Exam, then attended a weekend in Trenton with eight of my fellow cadets to demonstrate our cadet skills and attain the highest level of cadet certification. I left the weekend with my NSCE, and scored over 90% on my drill instruction portion of the program. After March break, leadership theory turns to leadership application on the parade square. I find a certain beauty in cadet parades during the spring, and I am extremely proud to be a part of the corps. I have always given it my all, from marching my best in the ranks of Smith Company in grade nine, to commanding a platoon and my role as Deputy Commander of Training Company most recently. In grades nine and ten, my dedication and commitment to attendance, drill, dress and deportment were clearly noticed by the higher-ups, and I was awarded Smith Company Top Cadet in 2007 and 2008, and a CO’s Commendation in 2008. This year in Training Company, I have gained valuable experience in commanding a platoon, and the responsibility of taking care of a WO and 60 cadets, and preparing them for parades. Of course, the cadet program offers even more than this, in programs outside of Thursday afternoons. In my first year at S.A.C. I took a keen interest in the Marksmanship program, practicing every Friday evening and attaining my Cross Rifles badge. When the team returned this year after a year hiatus, I continued with my passion for shooting, and attended multiple competitions with the Marksmanship Team. I have received my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, and am in the process of submitting my application for silver. I am travelling to Peru this summer with SASSAW to hike the Inca Trail, complete community service work, and attain my Duke of Ed Gold. Some of my greatest student role models at S.A.C. have been from the cadet program, specifically the CO’s and DCO’s of the corps. I looked up to them on the parade square and off, as they led in sports and other aspects of school life. I soon realized my desire to follow in their footsteps. I deeply desire the opportunity to give back to the corps in my final year all it has given me over my career in Cadets. I would be honored to be chosen as next year’s CO or DCO, following in the footsteps of those before me who I looked up to so much. The values of dedication, commitment and passion that the corps has taught me, and I believe I have demonstrated, are what I intend to use and instill in my fellow cadets if I am selected as a leader of the corps next year. OUTSIDE OF CADETS: Outside of Cadets I have held many leadership positions and responsibilities around the school. This year I am Assistant Head of Smith House, where I participate in the organization of house events, and channel messages between house and external leadership organizations around the school. I am also a Grade 11 representative on the Community Service Council, collaborating with a small team to organize, promote and carry out community service projects around the school. As a Middle School House Captain this year, I mentored middle school students in the mornings before class and during advisory, and interacted with them during middle school lunch and recess every two weeks. I am involved in club life, as President of the Photography Club; I organize and carry out meetings, activities, and workshops for club members, and co-ordinate photography for school sports and events. This year, with the help of Mr. Burton, I implemented a Photography Workshop & Lesson Series. I am also the Co-President of the Investment Club, and this year worked with my fellow Co-President to organize guest speakers to speak to students about career paths in business and finance. Outside of S.A.C., this year I attended the Queen’s Leadership, Excellence and Development Conference (QLEAD), as well as to the CAIS Leadership Conference in Hamilton as an S.A.C. delegate. At these conferences I attended leadership workshops and guest speakers, and worked with other student leaders to solve a problem and carry forward solutions to the entire conference. Commander of Training Company 2009 Organized and led Training Company, composed of grade 6, 7 and 8 cadets. In the course of the training season, I had to supervise the training of the cadets, deal with several discipline problems and have the dress and deportment that go along with being an officer in the corps. Training Company had some difficulties with discipline leading up to the final parades, but over the past week and a half of the cadet training year there was a vast improvement in the overall company. National Star Certification Exam 2008-2009 I passed the NSCE course, composed of an intense written test about cadet skills, and then completed a 3 day trip with evaluations in teaching drill and classroom lessons, bushcraft, map and compass, and physical fitness. In total I placed 14th out of more than 140 of the top cadets in Ontario. Marksmanship ‘A’ Team On the marksmanship team, I contributed to the corps. third place in the zone shoot. Throughout the season, my scores consistently improved from around 30/100 at the start to consistently shooting high 80s and low 90s at the end. I have received the First Class Marksman Award. I have been involved in as many areas as possible in school life at St. Andrew’s including: Middle School House Captain Member of the Arts Council Assistant Head of Laidlaw House Co-President of the Investment Club Receiver on the First Football Team Member of the First Squash Team (CISAA Champions) McEwen Leadership Program Focus CAIS/QLEAD Leadership Conferences Lifeguard Volunteer for the Swim Team

Last year I was the right marker for my company and I was a 2IC for my company as well. I was in the runner up for best cadet in my house for grade 10 but I unfortunatley was beat by one vote. This year, Mr. Costanzo appointed me to take on the task of being a section commander. I have had some great practice calling out the commands for drill and I am very comfortable doing it now. This year, I played Varsity Volleyball as a starter and we placed second in the CISAA finals. Also, I played Junior Varsity hockey and we placed first in the CISAA finals with many other victories. I am in Laidlaw and this year I was assistant head of house. I put together pizza lunches and organized some house events. I am a very responsible young man who has exceptional leadership skills and I want to be able to use them next year.

I've been involved in Cadets for three years. I've been to Rattlesnake point and completed numerous leadership modules in Red/Silver/Gold Star. I'm good at public speaking, due to my involvement in the debate club and drama club and would be able to deliver lectures and lessons on leadership to my class. I have a positive attitude and like to get things done. These good work ethics will hopefully rub off on the platoon I'm in charge of. I know how to be a leader.... In FOCUS this year I'm directing TWO plays, one that I've written myself. This job takes a lot of time and patience and is an example of leadership outside the classroom. I'm a senior member of the debating club and apply my leadership skillsv on and off of the debate podium. In "The Independent" Student magazine, I not only contribute the most articles, but do the layout and design as well. I am editor in chief for the FOCUS mini issue of "The Independent." I also help out in the writing centre and assist Ms. Staunton & Mr. Paluch when students need their essays proof read. I was awared the MIP medal in gr. 9 and the MVP medal in gr. 10 for Cross Country running and went to OFSAA. I demonstrated leadership on that team by being the fastest (leading by example) and keeping everyone's spirits up by being friendly. The examples of leadership listed above are proof that I'd make a good cadet leader. Please choose me, for I have the skills which I look forward to demonstrating.

Our case study group was the runner up for the Case study contest last year. A highlight of the year was the Grade 10 Delliote Business Trip Selective. I was one of the interested students to got to go down and meet with Delliote consultants and find out how and what they really do. 2008-2009 Special Olympics Student Volunteer Was chosen to help out with the special Olympics seminar and help set up. Was selected to present an award that was broadcasted on TSN to Pinball Clemens while I was there. Was relied on by Mr. Gurr and would step in and take on responsibilities as requested. 2007-2008 Model UN: An exciting trip and experience that improved my skills in public speaking and working in unison with international students. It was extra work but was worth it for meeting new people and discussing the world and our place in it. 2007-2008 Duke of Ed Canoe trip: A very challenging cold wet canoe trip but allowed me to become a better leader and to push through physical and mentally tough situations. 2007-2008 Special Olympics Basketball Tournament Volunteer I was chosen to help out at the a local special Olympics event downtown which was a bunch of mentally handicapped children experiencing recreational basketball. Back then it was to play football and hockey. The deal we made was if I could be accepted, our family would find a way to pay for it. Since coming to SAC I realize how little I understood of the opportunity I was embarking on. I still love my sports, however the opportunities, places and friends I have experienced have truly opened my eyes to the possibilities for my life. I’m not here on a scholarship, I’m not the best athlete at the school and despite my finest efforts I’m not your best student. But I never give up and that’s what makes me more of an Andrean bit by bit, day by day. Being a prefect will provide me with opportunities to share what I’ve learned, allow me to give back and make a contribution to the school that has shown me what’s possible. In turn as a prefect I will learn and grow as a leader and stretch a little further to see what I’m capable of, all while providing my friends and classmates with my very best. Please list two members of the S.A.C. community who can speak to the panel on your attributes and accomplishments Mark Service, Len Gurr.

I do not have any major qualifications other than full completion of the Gold Star program and 5 years of experience with the core. I would cherish the opportunity to be a leader in the cadet program, but would not take advantage of the power and responsibility that comes with it. This was the first rugby team I had ever played on and it took me a while to learn the skills necessary to play. Position and Year U16 Soccer 07-08 I was a member of the U16 soccer team. This was the team I applied for last year and was able to get in but then I got moved down because I was the age group of U15. Position and Year JV Basketball Manager/ Statistician For Winter term in my 2007-2008 year I was a manager for JV basketball. As a first time manager I was not really sure what to do but a the season progressed I learned more about basketball and how hard it is to be manager for a team. Position and Year 1st Curling 06-07 I was a member of the varsity curling team. This was the first curling team ever to be put together at SAC and as such there were many members who were not familiar with the sport. I had played curling previously and took somewhat of a mentor/leadership role during the first few practices. As the skill levels of the team improved we were very much in contention for a winning spot. Position and Year 2007 Focus Tech Crew Lights Crew I was a member of the focus tech crew. I was in charge of lighting for plays in the tent. I helped set up the stage and also went through the lights with the director. Position and Year 2007-2008 Chess Club Executive Through last year and this year I was a member of the St Andrew’s College chess club. Last year I was a member and I attended every meeting. Position and Year 2007 Reach for the top member As a member of reach for the top we answered questions about random facts. It was an interesting experience and although we never were able to go to a tournament it was fun working with my peers and older groups on these questions. Position and Year Fencing 2008-2009 Being a member of fencing was new and fun. It is an interesting sport and lot more complicated then many people think it is. It requires quick thinking to be successful. Position and Year 2007-2008 Cadet Silver Star Expedition I feel this expedition is note worthy because a group of 5 people was extremely cohesive. We were able to solve all the problem and find out which way to go. We were the fastest out of all the groups in grade 10 for the grade 10 silver star eco-race. Position and Year 2008-2009 Mac House Captain First Term During this school year I was a Mac House Captain. It was an interesting experience and I learned a lot about being a leader especially in since I was Mac house in grade 9. It was a two day weekend expedition in which we had to complete four different tests to receive our certification. I was able to complete this and received this certification. It is an interesting experience and it is very challenging trying to make 40 middle school kids listen to you but it is a fun rewarding experience. Position and Year 2008-2009 Chess Club Vice President Through last year and this year I was a member of the St Andrew’s College chess club. As a member of chess club with experience I am one of the major members. As such next year I am probably going to be leader next year.

Leadership Experience at S.A.C. (Detail all relevant experiences…Provide details of responsibilities and benefits) SAC T.V. I was selected to partake in a group called SAC T.V. My job was to interview people around the school and find new issues and stores to cover. I had a group of 4 and had to make sure that our tasks were completed on time and were perfect. I wanted to try SAC T.V because I thought it would be a good experience having to interview people all the time. S.A.G.E I was on S.A.G.E in my grade nine year and as a “rookie” I did the grub work. I had to make posters and news letters on very short notice and then place them up around the school on tight deadlines. This a good learning experience when trying to get work done on time and efficiently. Middle School Council I was elected by my peers to be a member of this council when I was in grade 8 (2006-2007). As a member of this council I was essentially a Middle School Prefect. I was responsible for organizing spirit events and making announcements in the Middle School. Master Corporal: (Section Commander) This is my current rank in cadets. In order to achieve this rank I must have passed green, red, silver, cadet levels. As well I must have completed training as a Private, Lance Corporal, and Corporal. I have also received the Silver Star Fitness award for outstanding fitness. As a Section commander I was promoted by Mr. Costanzo to help lead the Laidlaw platoon in drill and be responsible for my own section. U-16 Football I have been a member of U-16 football for one year now. As a new member and player to the game I just wanted to learn the game. I started out with a tough lost to St. Mikes. I noticed we lacked leadership and tried my best to support the team even though I was a brand new player U-16 Basketball I have been a member of U-16 Basketball for two years. I have been playing this game my whole life. Since U-12 I have been at St. Andrews basketball organization. As a veteran player and team Captain it has been my constant responsibility to show leadership, sportsmanship, and set a good example for my teammates. I left this year being M.I.P and my coach telling me that I had dedicated so much time to this game and said I will have a good future at first . U-16 Rugby: I have been a member of U-16 Rugby for two years now. I have been playing this sport for 5 years and love the game. I am a veteran player on this team and as Captain of the Forwards I need to show leadership and support every single game. I hope that this season things go well and we come home with a championship. Tour Guide Group I have been a member of this group for two years now. As a member of this group I am an ambassador for the school. If any students should be interested in attending the school and would like a tour, I would be someone to take them around the school. Member of Focus Film Festival I had a lead role in a Focus play last year called Lord of the Flies. I played a character named Ralf. I also had a small role in the play Cabaret, preformed last year as well. This year I have been cast in another Focus play called Journey’s End. I am a character named Hardy. Academic Scholar I have been an academic scholar (80% or above), My average has been as high as 83%. Leadership Experience outside S.A.C. (Detail all relevant experiences…Provide details of responsibilities and benefits Duke of Ed. Bronze Award Completed 15 hours of community service over six months. Completed 30 hours of physical activity over 15 weeks. Completed a 2 day expedition. Ontario Regional Training Centre I am currently a part of a basketball training centre and was asked by Mr. Ludwig to play in this “league”. I have been trying to show leadership in this organization. St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Camp Councilor I was a volunteer camp councilor at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church for 4 years over the summer. As a camp councilor I have been responsible for leading, supervising, and setting an example for smaller children between the ages of 7 and 11. Outreach Committee (Malawi Fundraiser) 2007-2008 During the last school year I was a member of the outreach committee, with my specific job being a main fundraiser for the Malawi trip which I am going on in August. For this job I worked with other members to create many different fundraising ideas to make enough money to build a kitchen in Malawi. I also worked towards the other common goals of the entire committee. This group really gave me a chance to work as a team within the SAC community. Middle School House Captain 2007-2008 As a house captain I was able to establish relationships with kids from the middle school that will last a very long time, hopefully even after I graduate. Being a house captain gave me a great sense of responsibility. It gave me a chance to organize my own events, work with a partner, and really understand what it is to lead and be a role model to a group of younger students. Cadets : Sergeant , Ramsey House Right Marker 2007-2008 Within the cadet core I have obtained the rank of Sergeant. I have also successfully completed the gold star course and will next year be a Senior NCO to a group of younger students. I am also the Ramsey House Right Marker, and next year I intend on applying for Captain of Ramsey. Sports: Grade 9 In my first year at SAC I played only two sports. First term I played volleyball. I just barely made the team but by the end of the season I had a starting position and was named MIP. In third term I made the Senior Golf team. By the end of the season I was ranked fourth on the team. Grade 10 In this year I again played volleyball first term, this year being named a co-captain which again gave me a great chance to experience leadership. For the winter term I did weight training, and again for third term I played on the senior golf team, this year being ranked number three over all. Grade 11 In my current year at SAC I participated in weight training first and second term. In third term I am again playing senior golf, this year hoping to be number one or two on the team. Duke of Ed. Within my leadership experience at SAC, I have been able to obtain my Bronze Duke of Ed. I plan on receiving my Silver by the end of this year, and then obtaining my gold when I go to Malawi in August. McEwen Leadership Program In grade 10 I participated in the McEwen leadership program which was a course-like program created and run by Mr. Service. In this program we learn many different techniques and characteristics of a good leader. Academics Since I have started here at SAC have been a scholar and a merit pin recipient every term. Last year my overall academic average was 85%, and this year I plan on it being slightly higher so I can apply to American schools in September. Volunteering - 88 hours of community service - 30 hour famine - 7 hour soccer game - Special Olympics volunteer(downtown)

This was my first year being involved in the Cadet Corps, which I enjoyed a great deal. I was promoted to the rank of Master Corporal in the spring and was fortunate enough to be apart of the 2008 Best Company in Sifton Company. In the fall, I played on the First Football team which was a great success, I tried to lead by example by always working hard and performing to the best of my ability. In the winter I was a member of the First Hockey team, we enjoyed a very successful season by winning both league championships that we were apart of. Once again, I tried to be a leader by the setting the example of never taking a day off and always coming to the rink ready to improve. I have already applied for house leadership positions for next year and am very much looking forward to the possibility of having a role in the house next year.

The following paragraphs describe my leadership experiences at SAC: Outreach Committee 2007-2008: My role in the Outreach Committee is to help come up with ideas and plans for fundraisers. Three members of the committee and I were assigned to do all the fundraising for the Malawi trip this summer which I will also be attending. We have had a very successful year so far, having raised almost $25,000 by doing casual dress days, a concert, a raffle, and a gala. I have experienced what it’s like to be on a committee at SAC, and my leadership and skills have improved. Sports 2005-present: Throughout my sports career at St. Andrew’s I have played on the U16 Volleyball Team, 1st Volleyball Team, Alpine Ski Team, U16 Rugby Team, and am currently playing on the 1st Rugby Team. When I played on these teams I was always trying to bring the team together as a whole, so that we would play together like a true team. I always made sure that everyone kept a positive attitude and morale, to help us push forward and succeed. During 2006-2007 I was captain and MVP of the U16 Volleyball Team. We had quite a successful season coming in third place in CISAA league play. Before each game I would give my teammates a pep talk to motivate them to try their best no matter what. I learned many crucial lessons that season on how to get people to follow you. Special Olympics Event 2007: A few students and I travelled downtown with Mr. Service to help out at a Special Olympics event. A had a few tasks to complete in order to make the event successful. I was responsible for helping set the hotel up for the event, along with helping run the event being a greeter for the guests. We were all very successful enabling the Special Olympics event run smoothly with no complications because of our hard work. Math Tutor 2008: Every Monday for an hour after school I tutored a grade 9 student in mathematics. The student was struggling in the course, and my job was to get the student onto page in order to give him a better understanding of the course and improve his marks. My student improved a lot over the time of my tutoring and his mark went up. Minga For Malawi Concert 2008: Being on the Outreach Committee, I am responsible for the fundraising for our grades trip to Malawi this summer. One of our fundraisers was a concert called “Minga For Malawi”. The concert was a series of performances all based around Africa. I performed in the concert as a “gumboot” dancer. We put lots of work into the show and overall it was a great success. Malawi, Africa Trip 2008: This Summer I will be travelling to Malawi Africa with a great group of students and faculty members from SAC. We are going to help build a kitchen in a hospital. It’s going to be an amazing experience and I’m really looking forward to it. Cadets: I have been part of the St. Andrews cadet corps since grade nine, and i have learned a lot about leadership and the needed skills in order to be a good and even great cadet leader. I have been to almost all of the cadet practices missing only a couple because of other appoitnments. I have had to show leadership in my corps. I currently hold the position of master corporal. I look forward to being a cadet leader for next year.

I have completed all my levels since I have been here in grade 9, which have been Red, Silver, and Gold Star. I now have the rank of sergeant in Laid law Company. I was appointed to be a platoon leader, in which I was in charge of the ranks by setting a example, and motivating my group. I think I did a good job of this because my platoon won the best platoon this year. I was in weight training for the first term, first swimming for the second term, and 1st cricket for the third term. I try and do a sport every term. Next year I would like to teach either grade 9 or 10, but grade 9 being first pick respectively, I would like to apply to be the captain for laid law or a lieutenant Thank you for you time Tom Brindley

I am currently a Master Corporal and have been taking Cadets at St. Andrew's College for two years now. I am very enthusiastic and really enjoy being a part of the 142th Highland Cadet Corp. I currently have my Gold level for the Fitness Test and have recently completed my Silver Star Training. I have my bronze level for Duke of Ed and shall be filling out my booklet to receive my silver level shortly. In addition, I have the Marksmanship badge and are currently the "Top Cadet" in my year. In terms of sports team, this year, I have played for four sports teams this year. U16 Football in which I was a captain for the Defence Team. For my winter sports, I was playing for U16 Basketball and Captain of the Varsity Fencing team, also receiving the MVP award. For my last term this year, I was involved in U16 Tennis. I am also involved in the Community Service Council and the Volunteer Service Council, have been involved in FOCUS and Fall productions. Usually, I take on the role of House Manager in these plays and sometimes the role of a producer. I am hoping to take the National Star next year and become the Captain of Training Company. However, my main purpose for this application is to either lead the red star (rattlesnake) or silver star (ZET) outdoor training for next year. I have experience with leading small groups and really enjoy the outdoors. I am hoping to be a real assist for next year's cadet corp.

Debate Club member 2007-2008 Took attendance from time to time, participated and helped younger debate members excel. Investment club 2007 New member, learnt things about investing mainly that I hoped could be taught to other members in the next year. Salesian Group/Retreat - 2008 New member, helped to organize some of the smaller things, participated in many of the activities planned. Further developed the leader in me. Maple Trails Clean up, Teen Leader, 2007 Teen leader of my community park clean up. Supplied garbage, recycling bags, split up the teenagers. Helped organize a BBQ afterwards with green bin waste and recycling. It was rewarding enough to see people enjoying a clean and safe park. Del Manor 2005-2008 Meal aide, coffee/tea time aide, bingo organizer. Allowed me to see the time in preparing meals in a way that there is little food or plastic waste, everyone brought their own stainless steal or glass items. Suzuki of Newmarket, YWL (Young worker Leader) 2007-2008 In charge of new young workers. Directed them and instructed them on what they would be doing. Organizer of an entirely new surrounding garden area with environmentally sound sprinklers. - Interested in working with Cadets and encouraging them to enjoy cadets as much as I did this year. - With proper leadership I believe that students will want to involve themselves further in the Cadet program. I have had the same type of experience in the latter part of this year. - I would like to become a Cadet instructor I am, however; unsure of which instructor type would be best suited for myself as I have only been with the cadet program for a year. - While this is my first year as a cadet I strongly believe I have enough knowledge to lead the cadets of next year.

As a new boy this year, I have not had a chance to have really any leadership oppurtiunites. Although I play on both first football and first rugby. That being said, I also did not make the best of the oppurtiunites I was given. Specifically in cadets. At the begining of the year, I though that cadets was just a joke and I really didn't take it seriously. However when we moved from classroom to drill I saw what cadets was really all about and I must say that it has grown on me. Although, I am not the best cadet, right now with time I beleive that I could become a great leader, and an active member in the corp if given a second chance.

CADET QUALIFICATIONS As a new boy in 2007 I have worked hard this year to master the different aspects of drill and learn what cadets at St. Andrew's is all about. In the fall of 2007 the highlight of my cadet experiences was the Silver Star Zone Expedition Training Trip that I participated in. During that trip I learned about how to take a proper bearing and also improved on my leadership skills. From this experience I learned how to overcome obstacles as my group got lost in a deserted steach of nothing at around 11 at night more than 10km from where we were supposed to be camping. Over the winter I completed my cadet leadership modules and also took the course exam. This spring I have been an active mamber of Laidlaw Company and have overcome some challenges that I was having with my drill. Around the time of the Chruch Parade my marching was a little lopsided but I persevered and now am much better organized both in dress and drill. SPORTS 2007-2008 In this school year I participated in U16 football, U16 squash, and U16 rugby. Trying football for the first time I picked up a new sport and finished the year as a backup defensive end. On the U16 squash team I played in all team tournaments and league games except for the championship. This year my squash game improved considerably. Playing U16 rugby, also for the first time, I have earned a starting position as a Lock (number 5) and the first pod lineout jumper. I have really enjoyed all of my athletic related experiences at St. Andrew’s this year and am looking forward to playing next year and beyond.

CADETS I have always done my best to get involved in Cadets. In Grade 9 I was named the Best cadet in my platoon, giving me the incentive to try harder and accomplish more within the Corps. I learned how to take orders well and show respect to my Commanding Officers. Above all else, my experiences in Cadets have taught me leadership and responsibility. Captain of Training Company 2007: I currently hold the position of Captain in the Corps. This is quite possibly one of my greatest accomplishments at St. Andrew's as I am one of the only grade 11s to ever hold this rank. However, with it comes great responsibility. I am responsible for the entire Middle School in Training Company. My job is to ensure that the Company stays up to speed, and is able to properly perform all the necessary maneuvers and tasks. I am also responsible for making sure that the Lieutenants, Warrant Officers, and Major Warrant Officer are performing their duties effectively, and that everything within the Company runs smoothly. National Star Certification: A big part of my success within Cadets at SAC relates to my completion of the National Star Certification Exam. This program required me to apply myself in both leadership and knowledge of the Cadet program. I was the only grade 11 to pass all aspects of this certification, which include teaching drill and classroom lessons, map and compass lessons, fitness, and tying knots. LEADERSHIP Middle School House Captain 2007-2008 Community Service Council Vice President 2006-2008 SAC Dramatic Society Executive 2006-2008 Member of Christian Fellowship Malawi Trip Participant School Play and FOCUS SPORTS 2007-2008: first football, first swimming 2006-2007: U16 football, U16 swimming, U16 rugby 2005-2006: U15 soccer, U15 basketball, U16 rugby

Ramsey Right-Marker: 2007-2008 Cadet Corps Participation: 4 Years Middle School Council 2004-2005: My role on the Middle School Council was similar to that of Prefect, but is centered on the Middle School portion of St. Andrew's College. We would meet to organize events and new initiatives. I was also placed in charge of running the Middle School Tuck-Shop for the first year of it’s existence, and still runs to this day extremely effectively in it’s original location. Ramsey Leadership Council 2006-2007: This council meets to discuss new initiatives within the house and how we could make potential improvements. We also organize things such as pizza lunches, and house barbeques. SAC Dramatic Society Technical Crew 2005-2007: The SAC Dramatic Society Technical Crew was a group of several students that would help provide technical assistance for the plays that would be put on display at St. Andrew's College. My role, along with actually setting up and tearing down equipment, would range from help program lighting boards, stage manage, and several other key roles. I would also help in the training of new members of the crew if need be. The position certainly required extremely long hours and would sometimes call for staying and working on aspects until early mornings. SAC Model United Nations 2006-2007: Throughout the 2006-2007 school year I acted as a representative of St. Andrew's College in the SAC Model United Nations group. This group consisted of numerous boys who would later attend the large Model United Nations in New York City. We were tasked with researching our nation and it’s political policies, as we would latter be debating in large assemblies in order to pass mock resolutions. I was part of the SPECPOL assembly at the Model United Nations, which consisted of several hundred students from across the world, as it was a general assembly. I had to speak and present my thoughts and debate with these elite students in order to better my nation’s standpoint. This experience taught me a great deal about public speaking, debating, and forming relationships with others in order to better our nations. I.T.I Committee 2007-2008: For the past year I have been a Class of 2009 representative for the I.T.I Committee. Our committee focused on the technical aspect of our community, and met every two weeks to discuss potential improvements and hopefully better St. Andrew's College’s Laptop policies. My time on the I.T.I Committee has certainly allowed me to grow as a member of a committee, and to improve my ability to discuss and put forward my opinions in a professional environment. Student Ambassador 2004-2006: For two years I participated as a Student Ambassador for St. Andrew's College. It was my role to welcome and provide tours to guests of the school and potential new boys. While on a tour I would be required to answer questions about the school and show them around the campus and classrooms. Community Service: 2003-Present: I have currently amassed over 300 hours of community service. These hours were amassed through participating in several community service events such as the 30 Hour Famine, and the work I have done in the Dramatic Society Technical Crew has amassed many as well. I have also done community work outside of St. Andrew's College, as I have travelled with NGO’s Right to Play and Worldvision to Rwanda and Kenya to do various activities with the children and people that reside in these impoverished nations. Sport Commitments: Out of the 15 terms that I have attended St. Andrew's College I have participated in sports for 13 terms, and on 10 different teams. These teams include: Under 14: • Rugby • Squash (x2) • Tennis (x1) • Volleyball Under 16: • Football • Squash • Tennis (x2) • Volleyball First (Varsity): • Football • Tennis Overview: 2007-2008: Grade 11 • First Football • First Tennis • I.T.I Committee • Promoted to Rank of Sergeant • Scholar: Three Terms • Academic Merit Award: Three Terms • Scholar for entire St. Andrew’s Career • Member of Ramsey House 2006-2007: Grade 10 • Member of U16 Football • Member of U16 Tennis • Carol Service Grade 10 Reader • Student Ambassador • Model UN Committee Member • Golf Trip 2006-2007 Participant • Did technical work for “Cabaret” • Did technical work for several Focus Plays in “The Play Pit” • Scholar: Three Terms • Academic Merit Award: Three Terms • Member of Ramsey House 2005-2006: Grade 9 • Member of U16 Volleyball • Member of U16 Squash • Member of U16 Tennis • Student Ambassador • Battlefield Tour Participant • SAC Dramatic Society Technical Crew • Did technical work for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” • Did technical work for several Focus Plays in “The Tent” • Scholar: Three Terms • Academic Merit Award: Three Terms • Member of Ramsey House • Ramsey House Leadership Council 2004-2005: Grade 8 • Middle School Council • Member of U14 Volleyball • Member of U14 Squash (CISAA Champs) • Member of U14 Tennis • Corporal File for Demo Platoon • Scholar: Three Terms • Academic Merit Award: Three Terms • Member of Bruce Clan 2003-2004: Grade 7 • Member of U14 Squash • Member of U14 Rugby • Scholar • Member of MacDonald House • Member of Bruce Clan

Macdonald House First Term House Captain (2007-2008) In the first and a portion of the second term of my Grade 11 year at S.A.C I was chosen as one of twelve House Captains. This was perhaps my most challenging leadership experience at S.A.C because it was a 24 hours job in which I was responsible for guiding and helping 5 middle school students, in Grade 6! As well as organizing events and getting to know all of the middle school boarding students. All in all, it was a great experience serving as a role model for them. 2008 CAIS Student Leadership Conference (2008) On April 8th to April 12th 2008 I was 1 of 5 students selected to attend the 2008 CAIS Student Leadership Conference in Victoria, British Columbia. It was an excellent experience to learn more about leadership, obtain life skills, gain knowledge, have fun, make new friends, and get to see beautiful British Columbia. I attended and contributed to workshops and was the backbone behind my group’s presentation on health which had the motto “No Glove No Love”. Health and Wellness Council Founding Member (2007-2008) This year I was one of the select few that joined the newly founded Health and Wellness Council. It was again a new and interesting experience for me and I learned a lot of useful things from being apart of it. Although it didn’t really take off into the full aspects of a council I’m sure it will in years to come. Macdonald House Council President (2005-2006): In Grade 9 I was voted as the Mac House Council President by my peers, it was the one of the hardest tasks that I have yet undertaken at S.A.C. However, it was a great learning experience and I believe that it puts me under a great position for this Prefect because I worked with so many different people. Also, before I was elected the president, I served on Mac House Council for 2 years prior. Andrean Life Committee Representative (2006-2007): Last year, I was a representative of the hard-working Andrean Life Committee to ensure that the overall student-life of St. Andrew’s College would be more exciting, fun, friendly, and better for the all students. Residential Life Council Representative and Founding Member (2005-2006): In Grade 9 I also played an important part on the newly founded Residential Life Council, I believe this council started off very well, being from such an energetic house as Macdonald House I was able to incorporate my experiences as a boarding students very well. Upper School (and Middle School) Ambassador (2003-Current): For the past five years I have been a student ambassador, which is now know as being apart of the Admissions Club, by giving tours as a cause of volunteering my time and showing our wonderful school to many people. I think this can help this your leadership because it enables you to speak-out, contribute, and give opinions. Class Representative (2005-2007) I was chosen as the class representative for 3 classes in Grade 9 and Grade 10 which include Grade 9 Geography, Info Tech, and Gym, as well as Grade 10 Math, Gym, and History. The Class Representative’s job is to aware the grade advisor of assignments and tests and to take feedback from the students to report to the teacher and the grade advisor. Sports Teams (2003-Current): In my (almost) five year career at S.A.C I have been representing the school in many sports, in chronological order: Under 14 Cross Country Under 13 Basketball Under 14 Track and Field Under 14 Volleyball Under 14 Basketball Under 14 Lacrosse Under 16 Football Under 15 Basketball Varsity Lacrosse Under 16 Football Under 16 Basketball Current Year (2007-2008): Varsity Volleyball Varsity Basketball Varsity Cricket Drama Society Crew (FOCUS) (2004-2006): In Grade 8 and 9 I joined the Drama Society Crew in hopes of seeing Focus plays and to learn about drama to incorporate into my academics. I got to assist in setting up plays and incorporate sound and lighting effects to them. 5th Annual Battlefields Trip Participant (2007) During the March Break of my Grade 10 year I had the uplifting opportunity to attend the 5th Annual Battlefields Trip in France and Belgium. I was apart of around 25 students that travelled around visiting historic war grounds, sites, and monuments. It was truly an amazing experience as I got to witness with my own eyes the very places where my relatives fought for the freedom of our country. Haliburton Forest Trip (Group Leader) (2005) In Grade 9 Mr. Galajda ran a course called GLS10 in which for a unit we traveled to Haliburton Forest for a three day excursion. During that trip I was choosen by my group to be a group leader for numerous events. Such as, I was choosen to by the auctioneer for a specific part of trip, and being choosen to lead the group during a navigation part of the trip. Gold Star (Cadets) (2003-Current): This year I was appointed to the rank of Sergeant. Passing all Green Star, Red Star, Silver Star, and Gold Star with superior skills in all of the activities. I believe that cadets is a very important part of our school and I hope to continue to excel in it. There are also Bronze and Silver awards but I was one of two people that receive the Gold. Buchannan Clan Second Class Colors (2005-Current) At the beginning of Grade 10 I was one of a select few to receive my Second Class Colors Pin. This means I accumulated 150 clan points in only 1 year which is very unlikely for somebody to achieve and I hope to receive my First Class Colors at the upcoming St. Andrews Dinner. In Middle School, as a member of Bruce Clan, I was awarded all three clan points awards in only 2 years here. Scholar and Academic Merit Award Winner (Current Average = 87%)

Started my Cadet Corps when I came here in grade 9. From that time until now, so 3 years, I have steadily worked my way up through the rankings to my curret rank of Sergeant. I have also passed Duke of Ed Bronze. Sports wise, I have been U16 basketball MVP, JV Soccer Captain and MVP and U15 CISAA Champion. House leadership, even though its not truly official, I help out with our house pizza lunches, making sure people get their food. Community Service, I have almost 200 hours, once I hand in my current sheet, I should reach that goal.

Currently I am a Warrent Officer for Training Company (2008). I attempted National Star this year but was unsucessful. I completed the Gold Star exam with a tie for the highest mark. I have been on 6 sports teams since I came to SAC in 06/07: Weight Trainning(06), U16 Swimming(06/07), Triathlon (07), Cross Country(07), First Swimming(07/08), and Triathlon(08). In all of the teams I am on, I feel that I have made a positive impact with my leadership skills. As of this year I am new to Memorial House for having switching from Sifton House after my first year at SAC, and have no offical positions of house leadership. However, I am applying for Head of House for my third and final year at SAC(08/09).

I have been in cadets for 4 years since grade 8, and have passed green, red, silver, and gold star and now have a standing rank of sergeant. I am planning to continue in the national star. Have achieved the bronze level. I have been too optional parades such as the remembrance parade which was a significant parade not only gave me more experiences but opened my eyes and saw much more other cadet schools. I have been a house captain in mac house and plan to be assistant head of house. I have been in first swimming 07-08, rec swimming 06-08, u16 badminton 06-07, first fencing 06-07. I have always found interest in the cadets every year. also have been in two different house companies as there was a slight movement during the end of the house captain spots and have known what the best company memorial does during practices, and known the differences in Flavelle training and memorial training. I actively wish to improve the Flavelle house training to become a better and much more recognized company.

As of right now at S.A.C. my two biggest contributions in terms of leadership are towards the Andrean Life Council, and being a Middle School House Captain. Andrean Life Council 2006-2008: I have been on the Andrean Life Council for grades 10 and 11. This year I am the Vice President of the council. As a council we promote school spirit and create exciting events to raise school spirit. I've found that this council can be very productive when it wants to be and you have to overcome these kinks in the group to make sure things are done when they need to be. I believe what I have learned from this council can be put forward into teaching the group lessons, sometimes you'll have a student who feels that they should be allowed to joke around and possibly make the house look bad on parade or in practice. Also, they may think they can say what they want to you both in practice and in the classroom. You need to be able to overcome the obstacle and work around it. Middle School House Captain 2007-2008: I am currently a Middle School House Captain with a Grade 8 advisory group (Mrs. D’Angelo, Mr. Galajda). We meet in the mornings in the gym, their respective hallways. Being a middle school house captain has tought me a lot because I know that not always will people listen to you. You're faced with different situations from people and you have to react however you feel neccessary. I believe this would help me in the Corps because you are going to be faced with different tasks, whether it be teacher a special lesson or making sure your house is ready to march onto parade. Smith House Leadership Council 2006-2008: I have been on this council for both Grade 10 and 11. My duties include helping to organize house events, and contributing to the design of house clothing. Varsity Football: 2007-2008 - CISAA Finalists Varsity Lacrosse: 2005-2008 - CISAA Championsx2(2006,2007) OFSAA Champions (2007) **In terms of Instructor Leadership, I would be willing to teach any star level.**

Christian Fellowship Leader 2007-present: This year I have learned many leadership skills by organizing lectures and lessons for Christian Fellowship. I also planned our guess speakers and pizza dinners, while making sure that everyone in our club is having fun and learning a lot. Sports: Team Captain: I have been the captain of three sports teams during my time at St. Andrew’s. U14 Soccer, U15 Soccer, and U16 Soccer were the teams in which I was given the role of captain. This role helped me to realize that even though you are the same age as your friends, you can still lead them, teach them and take responsibility for them. I’ve learned that the greatest way to lead is by example; they will watch you and learn from you – even though often no words are spoken. Team Member: I have been a member of 15 sports teams while I have been at SAC. That’s at least one every term and 3 first team sports. This has taught me to have a good attitude and that the best way to get connected to your team is to be committed and to put all that you have into all that you do. Not missing any practices or games. This has led me to many Championships: 3 CISAA Championships: U16 Swimming, Senior Track and Field, U15 Soccer 1 OFSAA appearance: 7th U16 Swimming Middle School House Captain 2007-present: After applying and being accepted into this position, we immediately began preparing for next year. Coming into the New Boy Orientation and helping them out, we got into our groups and each pair got a class. I have come in every morning - other than Wednesdays - every other week to spend time with the Grades 6-8. Playing cards, board games, or even playing soccer in the gym. On Tuesdays we lead advisories and take control of the class for half an hour, leading them into activities such as: musical chairs, millionaire, making skits, or doge ball in the gym. I also connect with Middle school about once every two weeks when I have lunch duty. Eating with the kids and going outside and have recesses with them is a great opportunity to really get to know them. My main job is to be a good student that they can look up to and want to follow. Also to make sure that they have tons of fun. Academic Council 2005-present: In this council I work with Mr. McHenry to discuss any problems and to think of ideas that can help make our grade better and stronger academically. Also if some one is having an issue with their academics, they can come to me, which I report to Mr. McHenry to help solve their issue. Received Second Class Colours from Ramsey House Recieved First Class Colours from Ramsey House Sunday School Teacher 2003-present I started helping out with the younger children setting up games and activities. As the years went on I started leading small groups of children in certain Christian activities, and singing songs. National Saving Society Instructor – 2007 (AWSI WSI and Red Cross) 2008-present To receive my Red Cross I did 8 hours of volunteering as Assistant Instructor Ray Twinney. Once I received the certificate, I have done 3 swimming lessons on my own. I learned how to think quickly and on the spot, if something goes wrong. You just continue to be relaxed and in control and get back into the rhythm. I am also qualified with Emergency First AID/CPR-B and Standard First AID/CPR-C Camp Counselor: all summer 2007 I was a camp counselor from July 1st – Aug 25th with kids between the ages of 8-15. I learned to be patient and to maintain control. I also learned when to be strict and when to be friendly. To have fun but know where to draw the line. National Life Saving 2007-present My first experiences as a lifeguard was at camp. There are many kids jumping in and out of the lake and it can be very easy to lose focus. I picked up some organizational skills and I learned how to keep the kids in check when they were in the water. I also tested the kids swimming levels and emergency drill of the Water Front (scan lake area underwater). Then I started working at the St. Andrew’s College pool, and was fully prepared for my job. I also was a lifeguard at a few parties which was quite demanding - because so many younger kids are running around doing crazy stuff at all parts of the pool. This is where you need to use your loud voice making sure everyone is safe and under control. Leadership Program 2007: The end of last year Mr. Service started a leadership program, in which we took classes once a week to grow in leadership. We had many work houses on leadership and also had people some in to give us lectures. Are biggest even was when we went to a leadership conference called Me to We. This conference was extremely inspiring. We had many amazing speakers, one of them being Craig Kielburger who started Free the Children. Another inspiring speaker was a boy from Africa who suffered his entire family getting massacred by the rebels right in front of his own eyes. This was because his father stood up for what was right and now it was his turn. Leadership Training 2006: This was a 3 week program focused on learning about leadership. Learning how to deal with kids, with problems, and using creativity with kids. Also trained on taking leadership control and being fair. We also did a 4 day out trip canoeing in the Algonquin. This is where I gained swimming and canoeing skills. Orca B 2006: On my 3 week leadership training I also trained 2 hours a day on a canoeing course. Where I developed skills on canoeing. I was then able to take that skill to my campers, as a camp counselor, to teach them how to canoe and guide them through the lake to really cool hang out spots. Vacation Bible School Teacher 2003-2006: I led 6-12 year old kids through a bunch of games ranging from Parachute to road hockey. I learned how each age group of kids has different interests and types of personalities.

I am currently a Warrant Officer in Training Company. This past year I completed the gold star training course. I also completed my National Star course however did not manage to pass the final exam. As for House Leadership I am currently a moderator of Laidlaw conference. I am a middle school house captain which means I perform activities with middle school children and watch over them in the mornings as well. This past year I participated in three sports. First term I was a member of the varsity volleyball team, second term I was co-captain of the JV basketball team and third term I participated in weight training. Prior to attending SAC in grade nine I was involved with the Air Cadet branch Banshee 778 located in Richmond Hill. Here I learned about what cadets was and developed my interest in Cadets even before I was involved at S.A.C.

I am fairly well involved in the mechanics of the schools life. For these last three years that I have been here, I have helped revive SAC fencing. This year i was a co-captain of the team. I also participate in various dramatic productions. Last year i played a major role in a focus play and this year, I will be working as a stage manager for another production. I have expressed a deep interest in all things military, and i have openly discussed a career or a part time career in the military in my future. After three years, I've achieved Red star, silver star and gold star, and I'm looking to expand my horizons.

Outreach Committee 2007-2008: My Responsibilities on the Outreach Committee are to organize and plan fundraising and awareness events; to offer my ideas, skills and support to others on the committee; and to inform the peers in my grade and house about various events and opportunities. Outreach this year has been run differently than in previous years. Each member submitted an application in April 2007, selecting one month to lead the committee in fundraising and/or spreading awareness for the charity or cause of their choice. I was selected to lead the committee through the month of October for my charity - Operation Christmas Child. It turned out to be a great success. Every student had the opportunity to contribute school supplies, thus raising awareness, and casual dress day collection monies were spent on suitable toys. We were able to pack over 35 shoe boxes, filling them with the school supplies and toys. We then sent them out as Christmas presents to children in third world and war torn countries. Outreach is a team, and we have to work together to accomplish our goals. So, I have had opportunity to expand my awareness and partake in the organization of the other events, offering my input, ideas, and skills. Christian Fellowship 2007-2008 Christianity is a foundational part of my life and I have been actively involved in the Christian Fellowship of Saint Andrews since I came to the school in grade nine. This year, I have co-led the fellowship with two fellow Andreans. It is a very important responsibility that I do not take lightly. I believe that it is my duty as a leader to teach our members important messages from the bible in order to grow in our relationship with God and have fun along the way. My specific responsibility is weekly e-mail communication explaining our focus for the coming Monday. In addition, I also am involved in the organization and execution of Chapel services. The fellowship has a faculty advisor; however, the fellowship is run solely by the student leaders. Middle School House Captain 2007-2008: This year, I was given the honour of Middle School House Capitan. The advisory group that I have been placed with is a group of grade seven boys. Myself, and 7 other grade 11 boys, are on duty every morning of every other week, except for Wednesdays. We are also on Lunch duty for one day, every other week. Our responsibilities involve planning and carrying out activities for the boys in the mornings - and occasional advisory periods - to insure that they have an enjoyable, laptop-free, morning. I love working with kids and getting to know them. The most important responsibility as a M.S. House Capitan is being a positive role model. They pay very close attention to your every move, reaction and response; so, it is imperative that you are approachable and set a good and consistent example. The most notable accomplishment for my advisory group was enjoying a free pizza lunch, which we earned by winning the Christmas Tree Door Decorating competition with my creative design. The hardship of a M.S. House Capitan is having to cope with losing to a grade seven in a game of Connect 4. Sports 2005-2008: Sports are a very significant part of my life at Saint Andrews College. In my career at SAC, I have been a member of 9 teams, one for every term. The teams include soccer, basketball, swimming and triathlon. When you are on a team you automatically take on a number of responsibilities. Your teammates rely on you, that you are at the top of your game, giving it 100%, encouraging and supporting your teammates - regardless of whether you are winning or losing. The bible talks a lot about building each other up and I think that that is essential as part of a team. From my experiences, I have found that people operate below their potential when they feel put down or degraded. I was a key player on the U15 soccer team in 2005. We went on to win CISAA after a 9-0 undefeated season. When on U16 soccer at the end of the season I was called up to play for JV on their trip to Bermuda. The first teams that I have been a part of at this school are 1st swimming and 1st Triathlon. This term, as one of the senior members of the triathlon team, I have been given the responsibility of teaching the new members of the team. Teaching them tips, tricks, and techniques on swimming, biking, running, and transitioning between the sports. Dramatic Endeavors 2006-2008: I love to perform, and Saint Andrews provides several wonderful opportunities for me to express my talents. In my grade ten year I played a supporting role in the fall play Cabaret and landed a lead role in the FOCUS play, Lord of The Flies. Through both experiences, I realized the interconnected responsibilities that you have when you are a part of a play. The entire company must be on time for rehearsals and be prepared, having both their lines and blocking memorized. Every member of the performance must give it all they have got in order to achieve the goal of suspending the audiences’ disbelief. In my grade 11 year I played the part of Snow Boy in the major fall production of West Side Story. The play involved a great time commitment, we practiced for about 30 hours weekly for 6 weeks. This spring, I am preparing for a lead role in Journeys End during FOCUS and I am very excited for this challenging opportunity. Visual Arts 2006-2008: I love art and have done live sketching in the gallery during SAFA each year. It is a lot of fun and there is a significant amount of pressure from the guests and media that are watching. My most recent painting was chosen to be auctioned off at the 2008 Red & White Gala. Carol Service 2007-2008: For the December Carol Service, I was appointed the position of head usher. My responsibilities were to oversee the other 6 ushers and ensure that they were on top of the tasks outlined by Mr. Ryan. As a team, we were to guide both guests and students to their seats. I personally was assigned the task of reserving seats for the headmaster and other special guests and escort them to their seats. After the service we took up donation and I oversaw the donation and took care of the money collected. Red & White Gala 2006-2008 For the Gala in the year 2006-2007 I was a greeter at the outside the front door and directed guests to the gala room. Later I was in charge of a fundraising table that was selling pins. This has shown me the importance of being a good representative of the SAC when off campus. I have volunteered to help with the 2007-2008 Red & White Gala near the end of April. Smith House 2005-2008: My responsibilities in Smith house are to support the house in clan competitions. I have done so mainly through the school cross country runs. In grade nine, I placed 9th, grade 10, I came 6th, and this year I finished in 2nd place. I have also received my Second and Third class colours. Malawi Fundraising Minga for Malawi: The Minga for Malawi was a very interesting fundraising concert, it was neat to get a taste of Africa culture. The responsibilities entailed learning the dances, songs, and attending all the rehearsals. The specific responsibilities that I undertook were: learning a monologue that I performed, calling out transition phrases to let everyone know when to switch dances, escorting the other acts to rooms where they could prepare and practice, and serving the hors d’oeuvres. The benefits of the minga were learning the Africa dances and songs and really physically tapping into their culture. Running Tuck: It is our duty to run the tuck shop Tuesday of every week, in order to fundraise for our trip to Malawi. It is imperative that we be on time for our shift or else there is a large number of customers that are not served and that is lost profit. Cadets My leadership role as a cadet is to lead by example and show new comers how to perform the many maneuvers involved in marching. Cadets has also nourished my ability to receive leadership. Duke of Edinburgh: I have obtained my bronze Duke of Ed, I am currently in the middle of my silver, and I will be going to Africa in the summer for my gold level. McEwen Leadership Group 2006-2007: In this group we focus on how to develop our leadership skills through activities and conferences. It was very beneficial to focus specifically on leadership and to learn from other leaders. Community Service 2006-2008: I completed 100+ hours of community service through various events such as: the 30 hour famine, events through my church, and overseas mission trips.

Outreach Committee 2006-2008: Since entering the school in grade 6 I have shown a keen interest in humanitarian issues. In grade 6 I started the Middle School Comedy Awards, and MS Fear Factor which, for three years raised money for children in poverty at Christmas time. For these initiatives I was asked to sit on Upper School Outreach in Grade 7. Officially becoming a member in Grade 10, I have led a number of projects including the Andrean March for Southlake 07, Minga for Malawi 08, and The African Charity Concert 06. I have also been involved in support and organization of smaller events like casual dress days and the annual raffle. This experience has given me practiced knowledge of how to work with a team and work with all aspects of the school administration on events. S.A.G.E. Committee 2005-2006: I was asked to join SAGE in grade 9 after presenting a proposal to start a recycling program in the school. I was responsible for helping with a number of student directed initiatives and awareness programs, including personally organizing the visit of a Reptillia speaker. Sports: Team Captaincy: During my time at S.A.C I have tried a number of sports and been the student leader of some. I have been captain of Nordic Skiing for 3 years since joining it, MS Cross-Country (04), and MS Track and Field (04). These opportunities have taught me to work with my peers in training and competing often against each other in these individual sports. I was responsible during the past Nordic season to teach the new Middle School Skiers. Team Member: As a team member I have learned to work with groups, follow leaders both good and bad, and the level of commitment necessary to keep a team organized and happy. I feel it was important to my development as a leader to be a team member so I understand how to best work with fellow team members. Middle School Council 2004-2005: My first major leadership opportunity was presented when I was elected by student and teacher vote to Middle School Council. I worked along side five other amazing leaders and worked with teachers and prefects to organize events within the middle school. This opportunity taught me so much about being a good role model for younger students and working with a team of peers. SAC Dramatic Society President 2006-2008: I have held the position of President in the Dramatic Society for two years. It is holds both administration responsibilities including setting agendas, running meetings, taking minutes, and managing theatre spaces and contacts. It was played a huge role in developing my organizational skills and my effective management of people. Middle School House Captain 2007-2008: This year I was happy to help out in the middle school as a house captain. I was teamed with one of my peers and assigned to an advisory where we run Tuesday morning activities, monitor the halls in the morning before school, and eat lunch every two weeks with the students. I have also, on top of my regular duties, filled in regularly for house captains who have been away, and helped with the Middle School Arts Program teaching debating and drama. I have enjoyed working with younger students and trying to be a good role model while being a fun leader. Debating Society Senior Executive 2005-2008: Due to my advanced skills in debating and public speaking, I was elected to the position of senior executive in 2005. As a younger student I was responsible for organizing team meetings and helping my peers and older students prepare for debates. I have also been called upon regularly to lead debate lessons, and prepare tournament teams. This position has given me knowledge in leading older students and younger ones, and has allowed me to continue developing my skills of communication. Cadets: Headmaster’s Escort 2003-2004: I was chosen for my excellence in drill to be one of four standard bearers for the parade, and escort the headmaster and reviewing officer onto the parade square. Drill Demo Platoon: I was chosen in Grade 8 to be part of the Demo platoon for my excellence in Drill. Acting Warrant Officer Smith Company: I took command of the company when the WOs and CSM were late and formed the company up as well as being asked to act as the WO during parade practice when the WO was away. Southlake Organization Committee: I volunteered to lead the operational side of the Andrean March for Southlake and head-up the Outreach team. This was the biggest event I was involved in and required me to deal with the School Administration, Student Leaders, the Student Body, Teachers, as well as town officials and the police department. I was responsible for obtaining police escorts, town parade permits, the opening ceremonies, the press and the walk itself. It allowed me to practice my leadership skills and refine my ability to work with all people and delegate effectively to get the job done. 2007-2008 Involved in both Middle and Upper School New Boy Orientation Nordic Skiing Team Captain & MVP OFSAA Nordic Skiing Member of Triathlon Team Lead in School Play West Side Story Wrote, Direct and Acted in Four Focus Plays (Good Karma, Spring Awakening, Survival Box, and Zoo Story) Debating Senior Executive Middle School Debating Instructor Andrean March for Southlake Organizer Middle School House Captain National Me to We Day, SAC representative Harvard Association for Cultivating Inter-American Democracy (Best Delegate) Minga For Malawi: Producer, Organizer, and Performer Dramatic Society President Special Olympics Sports Celebrity Festival Volunteer School News Paper Contributor Contributor to the Thistle Literary Magazine Outreach Committee Member and Project Leader Bar to First Class Clan Colors for Chattan Clan Gold Star Cadet Emceed and Performed at Cadets in Concert Scholar All 3 Terms Won Senior Fulford Debating Tournament Assisted with Middle School Drama Malawi SASSAW Trip Over 100 Hours of Community Service 2006-2007 Nordic Skiing Team Captain and MVP Nordic Skiing OFSAA Lead in School Play Cabaret Acted in Three Focus Plays (Answering Bell, Litko, and On the Door) Debating Senior Executive 30 Hour Famine Participant and Organizer Directed First Student Directed Major Play (Waiting for Godot) Represented St. Andrew's College and Canada at The Worlds Public Speaking Competition in South Africa Qualifying Score at International Debate Tournament hosted by S.A.C. I would love to have a leadership position in our Cadet core in the 08/09 school year. I have not had any house leadership yet, however, I am willing to do whatever it takes to have a leadership position in our core.

I have been the MacDonald House House captain (Term 2) this year. I was promoted to be the MacDonald House HEAD OF HOUSE in my grade 12 year. I have been on the soccer team and the Track & Field team through my first year at SAC. I have a 90% average and a dedicated cadet with a current mark of 82%. Unfortunately, as a first year student I have not had leadership in the cadet corps but am determined to get promoted and achieve a leadership position in St. Andrew's college.
