Lieutenant J. E. Powell
Surgeon Lieutenant John Edmund Powell was the son of Ralph Edmund and Anne Powell, of Westmount, Province of Quebec, and husband of Audrey Powell, of Westmount. He attended St. Andrew's College from 1931 to 1934.
He was serving as a member of the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve with H.M.S. Avenger when he was presumed killed on November 15, 1942 at age 25.
He is commemorated on the Halifax Memorial in Nova Scotia, Canada (Grave Reference: Panel 8.) The Memorial in Nova Scotia's capital, erected in Point Pleasant Park, is one of the few tangible reminders of the men who died at sea. Twenty-four ships were lost by the Royal Canadian Navy in the Second World War and nearly 2,000 members of the RCN lost their lives.
