Private Gavin Kertland Burns, a Toronto native, was born on June 29, 1897 son of Anna Mary Burns and attended St. Andrew's College for the 1913-1914 school year.
After graduating he worked as a bank clerk and initially served as a private with the 48th Highlanders for 7 months. He then served with the Divisional Cylists for 9 months before being discharged because of "heart palpitations". He re-enlisted on April 19, 1917 (see attestation papers below) with the Divisional Cyclists with whom he sailed overseas in the spring of 1917. Perhaps the need for soldiers by 1917 deemed the heart palpitation less of an issue.
He died November 9, 1989.
